Swift or Shakespeare? That is the Question.

Hi everyone, it’s been a while and to be honest it’s even been a while since I made this game. I’m writing this post today mainly because I am trying to get back into the habit of both game making and updating about my games. My pseudo-nephew is really into games and wants to make games in the future (shoutout to Oli) so I want to lead by better example.

Swift or Shakespeare kind of came about as a joke of sorts. I currently work in the education department and one of my colleagues made a PowerPoint quiz of this concept as a filler activity and the kids really got into it. I wanted to try out Godot 3 for Linux and figured that a simple game like this would be a good starting point.

The game design was pretty easy and I started with just a word document of Shakespeare and Taylor Swift quotes. I just heavily filtered a couple of images of Taylor Swift and Shakespeare for the selectors, grabbed a stock image and heavily filtered it for the background, added some text boxes and ta-dah! Done! Mostly…

Coding in Godot turned out to have a bit of a learning curve as I am mainly used to Unity3D, and Unity is an object-based scripting system while Godot is decidedly not. I kind of had to rewrite the way my brain worked a bit to understand how to code in Godot. It’s been like two years since I made this game but I think I used C# still. Unfortunately, I have gone through TWO computer deaths since making this game and do not currently have a computer, so I cannot check the files/backups.

I eventually exported the file as a Windows exe and got like a whole folder but it worked. I also tried to export this game for Mac as most of my colleagues have Macs, but that was a whole thing because of Apple. I did spend a considerable amount of time trying to make a website version of this game but I have to say, I have no clue what I am doing with regard to that. I’ve coded effects into HTML and CSS before, I have made websites using various services including Wordpress and Blogger, and I cannot tell you how to embed a game into a website. I tried researching it at the time but nothing was helping.

Anyway, it turned out to be a fun little game that is really engaging as a brain break activity.

The link for the game is available here:
